SPOKANE, WA · IGNITION INTERLOCK
DEVICE + LICENSE
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breath-testing unit installed in your vehicle. The car will not start unless you provide a breath sample under the set limit, and the device asks for additional samples while you drive.
During a DUI-related suspension, many drivers can apply for an ignition interlock license (IIL). It allows you to keep driving legally, as long as you drive only vehicles with a working interlock device.
After a DUI conviction, Washington generally requires an interlock device for a set period. The length depends on your record and the details of the case.
Chris Bugbee explains your interlock requirements and helps you understand whether an ignition interlock license is right for you.
With 30+ years of criminal law experience, he looks at your license case and your criminal case together.
WHAT TO KNOW
Interlock devices must be installed by an approved vendor, serviced regularly, and used exactly as required. Violations can extend the requirement.
Understanding the rules from the start helps you avoid new problems with the DOL or the court.
An ignition interlock license may let you keep driving to work and family obligations during a suspension.
