ASSAULT IN WASHINGTON
CLASS A FELONY
First-degree assault is the most serious classification, typically involving deadly weapons or actions intended to cause severe bodily harm. As a Class A felony, it carries penalties of 93-123 months in prison and fines up to $50,000. Conviction also results in the loss of civil rights, including firearm ownership.
CLASS B FELONY
Second-degree assault involves significant injury or weapon use without intent to kill. This Class B felony typically results in 3-9 months imprisonment for first-time offenders, with fines up to $20,000. Sentences can increase significantly for repeat offenders.
CLASS C FELONY
Often involving assaults against public servants or law enforcement, third-degree assault is a Class C felony carrying up to 5 years in prison and $10,000 in fines. These cases are taken particularly seriously due to the protected status of the victims.
GROSS MISDEMEANOR
As a gross misdemeanor, fourth-degree assault involves minor injuries or threats. Penalties include up to 364 days in jail and $5,000 in fines. While less severe than felony charges, convictions can still significantly impact employment and housing opportunities.
